My grandfather was a working man throughout the depression but even he pawned his coat to buy food, one time after the humiliation of having been refused scrap meat bones by a butcher which he'd begged for to boil up as soup. Men used to fight in the streets for bread. You can see crowds on the verge of something similar, if you want, at any of the many mobile soup kitchens which now operate in our nation's capital.
